One of the original 3 towns referred to as the Tri-Valley area, Pleasanton is home to some of the most expensive real estate in the greater San Francisco Bay area.
William Randolph Hearst owned property here, and Phoebe Hearst lived here until a fire destroyed most of the Hearst holdings, including her 50 room mansion sitting on 2000 acres burned down. One of the few original buildings, the original gate house, is now part of Castlewood Country Cub.
Originally scheduled to be named after a General from the civil war, a typo changed Pleasington into Pleasanton and a town was re-named.
Hearst loved the film industry as much as the publishing field, and he brought the era of the silent film to the locals. An early vehicle for film star great Mary Pickford, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm was filmed here in 1917.
Pleasanton today is famous for its’ downtown area home to many world class shops and fine restaurants. The fairgrounds for Alameda County are also located here, and home to the largest gathering of Scottish clans in the world. Many visitors come from far away to see the Scottish games, the bagpipe competitions, and the throwing of the caber and the hammer throw.
