Useful Information for San Ramon CA
As is so typical of cities in the greater San Francisco bay area, San Ramon started out as part of the greater San Jose Mission. This mission was one of the most important, and supported a significant population and needed lots of land for the grazing of livestock.
Because these early missions were founded by the church, most of them have San in their name after the Spanish word for Saint.
The first European settlers to populate the area arrived around 1850, about the same time as gold was discovered in California. The earliest buildings were a post office called San Ramon by the inhabitants, and the name was officially recognized by the state. After the post office, a church, general store, and the stagecoach stop helped put the area on the route for even more settlers. It was after the railroad arrived in 1891 that the population started to rapidly expand.
San Ramon was late to incorporate as a city, waiting until 1983. Home to the famous Bishop Ranch Office Park, this is no longer a sleepy bay area bedroom community. The Office Park has attracted many large Fortune 500 companies, and has added a new library, hospital and community center. Property values have increased dramatically and remain among the highest in northern California.
